Exam Piece Ten
Image Ten
Before
After
Representation of relationships
The relationship in this image is the same as all of my other ones, that begin the relationship between nature and man, I believe this image shows that as the wall is a side of a building which is a man made thing, as all man made things it is made to benefit mankind only, but the plant growing out of the bricks tried anything to survive, it needed a place to live and grow and it decided to adapt in order to survive.
Formal Elements
There are multiple formal elements in this image ranging from line which is featured on the wall in the background and also on the plant itself on the leafs. There is also the use of texture which features on the wall and also on the plant. Another element would be colour, this is because of the bright use of colours in this image and especially after the photo shop process, this is because the green got brighter against the grey wall.
Compositional Elements
The compositional elements used in this image would be leading lines, though the line itself isn't smooth or straight I believe it creates a leading line of some sort which your eyes follow. The rule of thirds play some part in this image as the plant is to the left of the image which follows one of the lines. Another element would be depth of field, the depth in this image is a slightly shallow depth this is because the background of this image is not fully blurred out, it is still slightly in focus.
Photoshop Process
During the photoshop process I chose to play around with the levels of the image to make the colours more vibrant and stand out, I made the levels as you can see bellow.
Critique
I would go back and re-shoot this image, this is because I feel it could of gone a lot better than the results I'm left with, the use of elements both compositional and formal, I feel with more elements which are stronger the image would over all be a betting and stronger image to use.
Exam Piece Nine
Image Nine
Representation of relationships
This image has the relationship of nature and man, I feel it is this relationship not just because it is my desired relationship but because the image is of the top of a wall, the wall is a man made thing, it is made with the sole purpose of benefiting mankind, the moss on the other hand is not, the moss would have had to adapt to live in this environment.
Formal Elements
There are multiple formal elements in this image ranging from lines, which are featured on the front of the wall, also down the side of the wall and in the back where the trees are, it also features texture, the texture are of two things, for example the moss has a texture and so does the wall at the front. Colour has a part in this image, this is because there is a lot of greenery in the image which helps it stand out more against the light grey used.
Compositional Elements
The compositional elements used in this image would be leading lines, leading lines is a main part in this image, this is because the leading line is featured on the main subject in focus. Another element would be rule of thirds to some degree, this is because the wall in focus is to the right of the image. Another one involved would be depth of field, the depth in this image would be a shallow depth as not everything is in focus, the only thing in focus would be the wall.
Critique
I like this image, but I would change it, the only thing I would change would be that you cannot see the full width of the wall it stops just before the end of the width, I feel if the full width was involved I would have had a stronger image.
Exam Piece Eight
Image Eight
Before
After
Representation of relationships
The relationship this image portrays would be the relationship between nature and man, this is the relationship shown as the concrete circle is a man made object which is made to benefit mankind only, the plant growing to the side of this shows that nature tries to grow everywhere, no matter if you try and stop if growing it will grow in places deemed impossible to grow because nature adapts to survive.
Formal Elements
The formal elements used in this image are ones such as line, the lines used in this image would be the ones going round the circle, the wall and where the sky is. Another element used in this image would be shape, this is because of the main subject standing out and being multiple shapes. Texture is also used in this image as there is texture visible on the subject in focus. Finally colour is a big part, this is due to the amount of colours used, fro example though there is not a lot of purple you can still clearly see it, brown is also a big part as most of the image is a brown cream colour, the blue sky is vibrant so sticks out in this image.
Compositional Elements
There are multiple compositional elements in this image, for example there is a leading line in this image which is positioned on the wall, though the leading line is not on the ground I feel it is still a leading line. Another one would be rule of thirds to some degree, I think this because I feel as though the plant is on the left line of the rule. The depth of field in this image would be a shallow depth as not everything in the image is in focus.
Photoshop Process
The raw file editor process was pretty straight forward I went onto effects and then down to post crop vignetting. I moved the bars as the image bellow shows to get the dark effect round the edges.
Critique
Though this image is one of my own I feel the shoot for this particular one could of gone better, I took multiple images of this one place but I would have preferred it to show more of the road the wall this was on.
Exam Piece Seven
Image Seven
Before
After
Representation of relationships
The relationship this image shows would be the relationship between nature and man, this would be because the image shows some sort of moss growing on the concrete of a fence, the image shows this relationship as the concrete is a man made fence and it shows how nature can adapt to certain situations to live.
Formal Elements
There are multiple formal elements in this image, it includes formal elements such as line, this is because the fence creates a line going across like the concrete does, but it also creates a line going upwards. On top of that there are multiple lines in the background of this image. Another element would be texture, the texture in this image is from the concrete and the moss which is not the subject, these two things are in focus so you can see the texture more clearer. The element would be colour, this is because the colours in this image though not many, stand out, there are greens, browns and greys. The edit of the image makes the colours more vibrant.
Compositional Elements
The elements that you can see in this image would be leading lines, there is a leading line to the right of the image, this is a focus to your eyes, it makes the image more interesting to look at. Another element that you can see in this image would be rule of thirds, this is because if you look at the moss in focus it is to the left of the image, this helps to balance my image and make it more interesting to look at. The viewpoint of this image is a not a usual viewpoint, it is directly in front of the moss. The depth of field in this image would be a shallow depth, this is because there is little in focus in the image.
Photoshop Process
During the process of using photoshop for the image, I used the burn tool to make the image darker and then I changed the brightness to make it a little brighter, though it may of contradicted what I just did the burn tool is not the same as making the image darker with the brightness. After doing this I then went on to posterise and used that tool, I did not used a hard posterise, I made it just so the background where the cars and leading line is posterised.
Critique
This image though my own, I do not personally like, I only like the moss and hoe detailed it looks, I feel as though the background is all off as it is pretty messy, I could of found another place to shoot some moss with a less busy background to make the image stronger.

Exam Piece Six
Image Six
Before
After
Representation of relationships
The relationship in this image would be the relationship between nature and man, I believe this is the relationship as if you look at the image, this is because the image is of a plant which is nature, but not only any plant, it is a plant that is growing from the side of the building if you look behind the plant.
Formal Elements
There are numerous formal elements in this image, one of them being texture, you can see the texture of the plant if you look at the flower part, you can see where the plant has lived its life on the wall as the plant is now dying so now has more texture to the ends. Another element would be form, that being of the plant in focus, shape has a part in this image as well, the shapes being of the leafs of the plant. Pattern is also involved due to the pattern of the fence on the window and the wall. There is also a part of colour in this image, most of the colours are white, there are limited other colours, only a brown and green. The final element I can see in this image would be space, this is because the the subject looks almost as if it is just entering the photograph.
Compositional Elements
The compositional elements in this image are ones such as rule of third, the image has a rule of third as the subject is to the left of the image. Another element used would be viewpoint, this would be because the viewpoint is focusing on the plant end, this also makes the depth of field in this image is a shallow depth, this is because the only thing in focus is the plant rather than everything.
Photoshop Process
I used a raw file with this image so I used camera raw to edit the image. I Changed the exposure of the image, the contrast, I made the highlights and whites lighter and the blacks and shadows darker. On top of this I played around with clarity and vibrance to make the image sharper and the colours brighter.
Critique
This image I like, the only thing I don't like would be the background, this is because the background is quite messy, I feel if it wasn't as messy the image would be stronger.

Exam Piece Five
Image Five
I decided not to Photoshop this image as I wanted at least one or more of my images to be original images without any editing involved.
Representation of relationship
The relationship this image portrays would be the relationship between nature and man, this is due to the fact that the plant, which you would usually see in a more natural place is now growing from places deemed impossible for them to grow, the fact that nature can grow in man made things and from man made things proves that nature is adapting to man and can now grow places that man have claimed and created.
Formal Elements
There are a range of formal elements in view in the image above, for example texture is a part in this image as if you look just before the plant as the wall that is just in focus you can see the texture of the wall. Another element would be form, this is due to you only being able to see the plant in this image. Colour also plays a big part in this image the same as my other images, this is because on the plant there are two different greens, also the green stands out on the red brick wall, there is also a hint of white in the back also some greenery from other plants nearby. I would say this image shows space this is due to the main subject being just to the right of the image, it looks almost as if it is just entering the image.
Compositional Elements
The compositional elements in this image I would say a slight hint of rule of thirds in this image, this is due to the plant being to the right of the image. Another element would be viewpoint, this is due to the image being taken at a certain viewpoint to get the wall in the back and to get the plant that close, the depth of field of this image is a shallow depth as the only thing in focus is the plant growing from the wall. I feel that there is almost a leading line in this image, the leading line being the wall if you look at it from an angle.
Critique
I feel like even though the image is not Photoshopped as I wanted it to be a natural image, it could of benefited from it, but at the same time if I would of moved closer to the subject of the image, this would be just to avoid the wall before the plant and a little off the wall to make the leading line and rule of third stronger.

Exam Piece Four
Image Four
Before
After
Representation of relationship
The images above show the relationship between nature and manmade, I think this shows that relationship because it is a single plant out in the middle of a deserted concrete area growing though the ground which is a manmade thing. It also shows plants in the background over manmade things such as the fence and more of the concrete ground.
Formal elements
There are a range of formal elements in the images above, for example you have texture from the ground which has a big part in the image and it is in focus, another element would be form as the thing in focus is the plant and everything else is out of focus because of the shallow depth of field. Colour plays a big part in all of the images I have taken this one is no different with the colour of the plant being made more vibrant in the second image but also the background is darker and the colours are much duller than the first image. The image is also an example of the element of space the plant is at the start of the image just entering the space of the image.
Compositional elements
The conventional elements in the image include the rule of thirds, which is after I edited it by using crop to make the rule of thirds more obvious to make the image better. Another compositional element would be view point which is similar to my other images as I got down on the ground to get the image from the view point of the plant. Depth of field much like my other images is a shallow depth so it focuses more on the foreground and the background is the plants in the background.
Photoshop Process
The process for this image is pretty straight forward, I first cropped it to the size I desired by using the crop tool and then I used the sponge tool to dull out the colours and the rubber tool to add some colour back into the plant as it was washed out.
Critique
I feel like this image could have been taken better, I feel like I could have gotten lower to the ground to have the image straighter where the plant is involved or gotten closer to the image, that way I would not have had to crop it so much to make it how I wanted it to be. I feel like though I like this image I should of just tried more to make it how I imagined it to be.

Exam Piece Three
Image Three
Before
After
Representation of relationships
I chose this image to represent the relationship between nature and manmade as the wall was made by man but the looks of it was also knocked down by man which gave the plants more of an opportunity to grow there and adapt to different living spaces. I think this is a good example because it shows that no matter what man does nature will adapt to survive, I think this is a good example of that because it shows the lengths nature goes to survive.
Formal elements
In the before image the formal elements are limited but still there, for example the use of leading lines is still there but the background is too busy to focus on, so with the crop of the image it helps the eyes and the leading lines. Another formal element used similar to my other images is colour but the after image helps the images stand out whereas the before image the colours are washed out. Texture also has an effect in the image as the wall has a lot of texture involved as well as the leaves on the floor which stands out more in the after image due to the colours being more vibrant.
Compositional elements
The compositional elements involved in the images above are leading lines of the wall, another one would be view point as the image is taken at the view point of the plants which is interesting for the viewers as you can see how the pant sees things which is unusual. Though the depth of field is still there in the image unlike the other images it is not shallow nor deep it is around the middle as you can see behind the plant at the front. The foreground of the image would be where the plants are and the background would be the bricks. There is also the use of triangles within the image where the plants leaves are. I would not say there're rule of thirds in this image.
Photoshop Process
The photoshop process was straight forward and simple, I went onto images and then adjustments and selected curves and made the image little darker so the colours were not washed out as much and became more bold. I then cropped the image to get rid of the busy background and have it focus more on the wall and plants themselves.

Exam Piece Two
Image Two
Before
After
Representation of relationships
Similar to my image one the this image represents relationships between nature and manmade. This is because the wall is a man made man build object yet the plant has still found a way to grow and survive. This shows the relationship as the plant is nature and the wall is manmade and the plant is making this relationship as it is goring onto something that plants do not normally grow on as they cannot survive or get the nutrients needed to stay alive like they can in the ground.
Formal elements
The formal elements in the image before editing on photoshop would be form, as the plant represents form and it's the only thing in focus. Another formal element would be texture though you can see the texture of both the wall and plants leafs in the original image in the edited one it is much more obvious and easier to see. Colour is a big part in the after editing but not so much in the first, with the way the image was edited the colours are more vibrants and not as dull, the leaves are a lot more brighter and the wall is darker making it better to look at.
Compositional elements
The compositional elements in the before image where no editing was involved are very few as it only included view point, which is the view point of the plant on the wall. Another one would be the rule of thirds as the plant and wall are on the wall are in line with it. The depth of field in the image is a big part as it helps define the plant from the wall with the shallow depth of field. The use of triangle from the plant helps with keeping your eyes in the picture, the triangles are on the plants the leaves are triangle shaped and also the gaps between them are. The rule of thirds is not included in the first image as I had to edit the image to make sure it included the rule of thirds to make the image have more compositional elements and make it better. The foreground of the image would be the plant and the background would be the wall and floor.
Photoshop process
The process I did on photoshop was straight forward and simple. I first cropped the image using the crop tool to give it the rule of thirds it needed for the compositional element, I made sure to deselect the delete cropped pixels tool just incase I cropped it wrong and needed ti change it. I then proceeded to go on to image then adjustments and selected curves to make the colours more vibrant and stand out.
Critique
In this image I like the depth of field as it is a shallow depth of field which makes the plant stand out more than it would with a deep depth of field. I also like the formal elements involved such as the texture and colour, I did not however like the compositional elements as it did not have as many as i would of liked, the image overall could of gone better if I would of taken more to get it how i want instead of editing it on photoshop, also I should of gotten something to stand on as I was not high enough to get a good picture right above and with the wall straight, I think with the wall straight at the bottom it would of made the image a lot better.

Exam Piece One
Image 1
Before
After
Representation of relationships
For my relationship I chose nature and manmade, the image above shows that relationship as it shows a small plant growing out of the ground, but the ground is not dirt it is a concrete ground which shows the relationship as the ground is a manmade thing and nature has adapted to grow in such places in order to live.
Formal elements
There are a few formal elements in the image above, one of these being colour as there are two main colours which are both vibrant and noticeable, those being orange and green, but in my Photoshopped image the colour would be just green as that is the only colour other than the black and white backing. Another formal element would be form, the form in this picture both edited and none edited would be the flower and the depth of field is shallow so your eyes stay focused on the flower only, the edited one only emphasises this form as it's the only colour on the image. Texture plays a role but not a big one as it's only if you look at the floor or if the image is bigger that you see the texture on the ground and also on the leaves of the plant.
Compositional elements
Out of all of the compositional elements there are not that many. One of the few would be rule of thirds which plays a big part in the image my other image taken did not have this. Another one would be view point as the picture was taken at the view point of the plant. The depth of field also plays a pretty big part in this image as it is a shallow depth so it only focuses on what is at the front and blurs out the backing. The image also has a foreground and background.
Photoshop Process
Though the photoshop process took a while it was a relatively easy, I started out with my image and then I duplicated the layer. I then selected the black and white tool and merged this layer down to the backgrounds copy, this only made the copy black and white instead of every layer. I then selected the rubber tool and zoomed in with the brush pretty small and began to rub out the black and white in that was on the plant, this took and while as the plant was so thing but tall so I had to keep it quite far in with the zoom and slowly rub making sure not to get the back ground. I zoomed out after I rubbed to see how far along I was and also to make sure even if I went slightly over the lines that you could not tell.
Critique
I chose this image for my final one as I liked how the flower stood out and the angle it was shot at, I also liked the depth of field involved in the image and the formal elements that were involved and also because of the few compositional elements that are there were more than the other images taken. I think I could have positioned the camera a little better to have the plant more foreword facing instead of to the side. I also think I could have included more compositional elements to improve the picture. Overall I like this image but there are things I could have done to make it better.
